In 2016, a series of studies were published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology that attempted to determine if shoe soles were potential vectors of transmission for pathogens. The studies tested the shoe soles of physicians, outdoor workers, and operating personnel in a number of hospitals. They found that soles of roughly half of all three groups were positive for the presence of at least one pathogenic species.
